We are delighted to announce our collaboration with Michael Pawlyn, founder of Exploration Architecture and renowned author of "Biomimicry in Architecture," on the highly anticipated third edition of his influential work published by RIBA Books.

I’m working with Richard as a researcher and technical consultant on rewriting my book ‘Biomimicry in Architecture’, and he’s been brilliant. There seems to be nothing that has eluded his radar when it comes to biomimetics. The result is that the third edition of my book will be a vastly improved version.
— Michael Pawlyn, Exploration.

The new edition expands upon Pawlyn's foundational approach to nature-inspired design, introducing crucial new chapters that address the pressing challenges of our time. With a systems-first perspective, the book will guide readers through the intricate relationships between materials, structures, and ecological principles that can transform architectural practice.

Book Structure

The expanded framework will explore eight key areas, from fundamental systems understanding through to practical applications in thermoregulation, energy, and ecological economics. This comprehensive approach reflects the urgent need to align architectural practice with natural systems for truly sustainable outcomes.

Book sections:

  • Systems

  • Materials & material systems

  • Structures

  • Water

  • Thermoregulation

  • Light and Colour

  • Energy

  • Synthesis (inc. ecological economics)

Submissions and inquiries can be directed to Biomimicry Innovation Lab. The FINAL deadline for contributions is the Friday 6th December 2024..

This collaboration represents a significant step forward in advancing nature-inspired innovation in the built environment, combining Pawlyn's radical approach with our expertise in systems biology, ecological engineering and cross-sector knowledge in the built environment.

Join us in shaping the future of regenerative architecture.
