Built by Nature- A grand vision for the built environment

Built by Nature Prize

The Built by Nature Prize is a global initiative launched by Built by Nature, a network and grant-making fund, to stimulate innovation and scalability in using bio-based materials in construction. The prize, which totals €500,000, is the first to focus on bio-based construction materials such as timber, bamboo, hemp, straw, algae, and fungi. The Laudes Foundation and LTPP support the initiative and aim to address climate change by promoting the decarbonization of cities and buildings, given that the built environment generates up to 40% of the world's greenhouse gases. The judging panel for the prize comprises leading experts from various fields, including the built environment, architecture, finance, social value, and biomaterials. The deadline for applications is January 25, 2024.

About Built by Nature.

Built by Nature is an active and engaged network that aims to accelerate the transformation of the built environment to work in unison with nature, with a particular focus on timber building. The organization supports many stakeholders, including developers, architects, engineers, asset owners and managers, investors, insurers, city leaders, academics, researchers, non-profits, and policymakers, in their journey to decarbonise the built environment and protect nature. Built by Nature also funds innovative solutions and projects highlighting the use of timber and bio-based materials in construction, such as "The New Model Building", developed by Waugh Thistleton Architects, which provides design principles and guidance for multi-storey residential mass timber building in the UK. Since its inception in 2021, Built by Nature has made significant strides in promoting timber and bio-based materials as mainstream options in the built environment.
